Brighton University – Case Study
Friday, October 15, 2010

Water mist technology continually proves itself an ideal solution for protecting people and valuable equipment from fire. A science facility at a leading university presents particular challenges, since added to the usual fire risks is the potential danger of contamination from escaping laboratory chemicals.

Fire Risk Management (Dec 08) Watermist article
Friday, December 12, 2008

WATER MIST technology is a fire protection solution based on a principle similar to diesel fuel injection. Well-established as a fire suppression solution in the maritime industry, these systems are now becoming recognised in wider applications – for example, for protecting the elderly and vulnerable, and reducing the risk of damage to valuable assets, such as historic documents. In addition, at a time when reducing the carbon footprint of buildings is becoming more important, it can be a useful component of environmental strategy by saving on the volumes of water dispersed and energy used.

Current Projects

Ultra Surefire provide fire control for a wide variety of customers, designing, installing and maintaining traditional and modern systems in every variety of building. Our Case Studies illustrate how we work and what sort of problems we overcome.

Northampton General Hospital

Fire protection of service areas were a major concern to the management staff of the hospital. Rarely visited areas can become an issue where plant and boiler rooms produce the power and resources to maintain the hospital.

A potential fire could be unnoticed for some time before discovery, prompting management to look for a low pressure water mist fire protection system.

Ultramist has a very quick fast response discharge head that not only covers 25 square metres but provides a water wall barrier of mist across a ceiling, effectively preventing heat from travelling upwards through the building. An environmentally friendly system clean of any chemicals.

Being 8 bar low pressure the Ultramist discharge head uses a fraction of the water used during sprinkler installation. Forty litres of pure water as opposed to the traditional systems. In the boiler complex we have used open nozzles controlled by linear heat detection.

Stainless steel pipework using Mapress fittings are a clean fast installation method which avoids the problems associated with debris in malleable fittings.

Laurels and Westlea Elderly Persons Care Homes

The Laurels and Westlea Elderly Persons Care Homes are 2 projects where we have installed an Ultramist low pressure water mist fire protection system and due to the type of premises we used LPC approved Blazemaster plastic pipe throughout the installation. A quick trouble free installation kept disruption to a minimum for the residents who welcomed the fire system as further evidence of the councils support in their welfare.

A major influence for the project facilitator company NPS, was the space saving and the fact that no chemicals were used to achieve the fire ratings of Ultra Mist low pressure water mist system. Also the recessed low profile discharge head covers are smart and unobtrusive.

Ultra

Ultra supports the Fire Trade in installing high pressure water mist systems for engine test cell fire protection, gaseous fire protection for a large Birmingham installation and CO2 systems for plant rooms. Ansul commercial kitchen systems are also seeing strong growth and Ultra engineers are fully trained and certificated to provide a full nationwide service..

Water Mist Systems Protect Car Stackers

With tough mayoral decisions against extra car parking near office complexes, engineers have now designed car stacker units to park cars underneath office buildings and landscaped gardens.

Fire protection has to be an integral part of the design concept and High Pressure Water Mist provides a modern trouble free method of quickly extinguishing a fire and containing the incident with the smallest amount of water. It effectively isolates the heat around the fire, providing a quick flame knock down and extensive cooling.

Installation uses stainless steel capillary pipework interwoven throughout the structure, complete with the smaller footprint of pump set and tank. Ultra are due to start the next stacker later this year.
