Fire feeds on oxygen and CO2 effectively deprives it of the fuel for combustion. With its extreme density, CO2 permeates the protected space and smothers the fire. Because carbon dioxide can rapidly reduce oxygen levels, CO2 based systems should not be used in occupied areas. Frequently, a protected space will be secured with a safety interlock at the entrance.
Typical applications include protecting sub stations, paint lockers and specialist machinery rooms.
